Yorkie History and Origin: The country of origin of the Yorkie breed was in United Kingdom (England) during the 1800's. A champion dog breeder called Peter Eden (1825 - 1889) of the West Riding of Yorkshire is credited with breeding the modern Yorkie dog. Peter Eden decided to develop a miniature, prick-eared dog with a long, silky, silvery grey and tan coat that would appeal to wealthy women as a Ladies Dog. To achieve his goal local Lakeland terriers, with wiry hair but the desired colored coats, were cross bred with Skye terriers and the Maltese dog to achieve and further enhance the desired results. Skye terriers were used to provide a prick-eared look, lengthen its coat and add a cool-toned, metallic gray color. To eliminate the wiry texture of the Lakeland coat Maltese dogs were used in the breeding program, imparting softness and silkiness to the hair, without reducing the length of the coat.
