Origin of the name: The origin of the name "Wirehaired Vizsla" derives from the description of its coat and the Hungarian word meaning "pointer". 

Wirehaired Vizsla History and Origin: The country of origin of the Wirehaired Vizsla breed was in Hungary during the 1930's. However, it was a strain of the ancient Vizsla that were used by the Magyar tribes as hunting dogs when their tribes ruled a vast territory in Hungary under Attila the Hun (406–453). The original Wirehaired Vizsla has a short, smooth, dense coat but Hungarian breeders noticed that some had thicker coats which provided them with better protection in water and rough bushes.

A dog breeder called Mr. Vasas Jozsef developed the Wirehaired Vizsla by crossing the original breed that had denser coats with a German Wirehaired Pointer. The result was the Wirehaired Vizsla which was successfully exported to other countries in Europe and to the United States. The Wirehaired Vizsla was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 2014.
