Wire Fox Terrier History and Origin: The country of origin of the Wire Fox Terrier breed was in United Kingdom during the 1700's. The Wire Fox Terrier was bred by Tom Wootton, of Mapperley, near Nottingham who obtained a terrier from the esteemed Belvoir Hunt Kennels. The new Wire Fox Terrier breed was descended from earlier varieties of British terriers, like the Manchester Terrier, that were cross bred with the Beagle and the Harrier - breeds that had short, hard,  coarse coats.

The Wire Fox Terrier was used farmers and by sportsmen for tracking and hunting foxes. The farmers valued the Wire Fox Terrier as an effective form of pest control against not only the fox but also vermin, rabbits and moles. The tenacious Wire Fox Terrier would track their quarry and when the animal went to ground the dog would bark noisily to alert the hunters and dig furiously to harass the animal until it left its hiding place when the hunter would kill it.

The 'Fox Terrier' dogs came in two different types; one with a wiry coat and the other with a smooth coat (now known as the Smooth Fox Terrier). A Smooth Fox Terrier's head is more V-shaped than a Wire's. Both types of dogs were considered the same breed for many years. The first standard for the Wire Fox Terrier was established in 1876, separating it from the smooth coated dogs. The Wire Fox Terrier was officially recognized by the AKC in 1885.
