The goal of crossing the two breeds was to create 'Pugadoodle' puppies that incorporated the vast array of coat color combinations, self- reliance and agility of the Pug with the high intelligence and non-shedding coat of the Poodle.

Pugapoo History and Origin: The country of origin of the Pugapoo breed was in United States during the mid to late 1900's. The lineage of the hybrid Pugapoo is a combination of two dog breeds. The Poodle, the "Caniche", began as a water dog, specifically as a duck retriever, in Germany during the 1500's. The Pug, the "Monk's Dog", originated in China as a Companion and Lapdog dating back to time immemorial.

In the late 1990's dog breeders began to create the fashionably 'Designer Dogs" and began developing a new breed based on the combined qualities of the Poodle and the Pug. The breeding programs resulted in the Pugapoo, an adorable dog that the range of coat colors, self-reliant nature and athleticism of the sparky Pug with the high intelligence levels and low shedding coat of the Poodle. The hybrid Pugapoo proved to be a favorite with families and kids over 6 years old. The cross-breed Pugapoo is currently recognized by the Designer Dogs Kennel Club (DDKC) and the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).

Pugapoo Height: This breed is classified as a small sized dog. The height to the shoulder of a male dog is 9.8 - 15 inches (25 - 38 cm). The height to the shoulder of a female dog is slightly less.

Pugapoo Weight: The weight of this small sized dog, in a male dog is 12 - 24 lbs (5.4 - 11 kg). The weight of the smaller female dog is slightly less than the male.

Pugapoo Coat Type - LOW shedding coat: The coat type is described as varied coat type depending on hereditary traits and the Pugapoo coat can therefore be short or long  soft or silky hair that can be a loose wavy coat, a tight curly coat or a straight coat.

Pugapoo Coat Colors: The colors of this dog breed consist of assorted colors consisting of black, brown, cream, gold, gray and white.

Pugapoo Grooming Requirements: The grooming needs of the Pugapoo is dependent on the type of coat it has inherited from its parents, either the Pug or the Poodle.
