The Poodle, the "Caniche", began as a water dog, specifically as a duck retriever, in Germany during the 1500's.

The story of the Labradoodle began when Wally Conran of the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia is credited with the development of the Labradoodle in 1989. He began the breeding program in response to a request from a visually impaired woman in Hawaii who needed a guide dog that would not aggravate her husband's dog allergy. Wally Conran decided to combine the temperament of the Labrador, which is suitable for Guide Dog training, with the coat of a Poodle.

The Poodle's coat is suitable for people with allergies and the dog is also known for its high level of intelligence. The result of the cross breeding was a litter of puppies and samples of their coats were sent to Hawaii. One of the coats did not produce an allergic reaction in the husband.

The coat belonged to a male called Sultan who had the required non-irritating coat together with the intelligence and the good temperament that was essential for a guide dog. Sultan went on to be trained and became a successful guide dog in Hawaii.
