Origin of the name: The origin of the name 'Kooikerhondje' derives from the Dutch words 'kooi' meaning "duck trap" and 'hond' meaning "dog and 'je' meaning "small". The duck hunter was known as the 'kooiker'. The name Kooikerhondje therefore literally translates as the small dog belonging to the duck trapper.

Kooikerhondje History and Origin: The country of origin of the Kooikerhondje breed was in Netherlands during the 15th Century. The spaniel-type dog was bred as a hunter of water fowl along the many rivers, canals and dikes in Holland The Kooikerhondje worked with man as a duck decoy by luring ducks into an 'eendenkooi' (meaning a "duck-cage") and retrieving them. The Kooikerhondje would move between decoy screens in order to catch the attention of the ducks and provoke their curiosity. The Kooikerhondje would then lure the ducks further down the decoy pipe where they are captured in a trap.

The Kooikerhondje fell into decline in the 1900's but was revived through the efforts of Baroness Van Hardenbroek van Ammerstol just after WW2 (1939 - 1945). In 1966 the Dutch Kennel Club 'Raad van Beheer' adopted the interim breed and in the Kooikerhondje breed was officially recognized in 1971.

Kooikerhondje Modern History: The modern history of the Kooikerhondje moved on and the Kooikerhondje is still used in the Netherlands for duck hunting but also as an aid to ornithologists who ring various waterfowl for on-going research. As a matter of interest, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever was an ancestor of the Kooikerhondje.
