Eurasier Characteristics: The reticent and calm Eurasier is a breed of medium sized dog, classified as a member of the Non-Sporting Dog Group (Spitz type). The Eurasier, is characterized by its elegant, well proportioned appearance with a distinctive spitz-type, richly plumed  tail that curls up and over its back and a delightful alert, foxy expression. This "designer dog" hybrid breed exhibits the combination of characteristics, and a temperament mix, associated with the German Wolf Spitz, the Chow Chow and the Samoyed. Other characteristics of the Eurasier include dark, medium sized, oval shaped, slightly eyes; high set, erect, triangular shaped ears and a jaunty gait.

The temperament of the Eurasier can be described as Watchful, Reserved, Even Tempered. The coat type of the Eurasier is described as thick double coat in assorted colors.  Due to its characteristics and qualities, the Eurasier demonstrated the desired traits of a Hunting dog (Spitz type) and is known by its nick name the "Wolf-Chow". Eurasier Breed Group and Dog Type - Non-Sporting Dog Group (Spitz type): The Eurasier is one of the many breeds of dogs that belong to the Non-Sporting Dog Group (Spitz type).

Other names for the Eurasier: The Eurasier is known by the nickname of the "Wolf-Chow". Other names for this breed of dog include the Eurasian and the Eurasian Spitz.

Origin of the Eurasier name: The Eurasier was originally named the "Wolf-Chow" but was renamed in 1973 when the breed was recognized by the German Kennel Club (VDH) and the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI). The origin of the name "Eurasier" derives the word 'Eurasian' from a combination of the words Euro + Asian meaning "of Europe and Asia".

Eurasier History and Origin: The country of origin of the Eurasier breed was in Germany during the 1960's. During the 1950's and the 1960's Julius and Elfriede Wipfel, from the small town of Weinheim in the north west of the state of Baden-Wurttemberg in Germany, chose to develop a new family-oriented breed of companion dog. They wanted the dog to be calm but watchful with the ability to forge close family bonds. The couple cross bred the sociable Samoyed, the calm Chow Chow with the steadfast German Wolf-Spitz, now known as the Keeshond. The Samoyed, the Chow Chow and the German Spitz were all members of the Spitz type of dogs and the couple aimed at producing a new breed of dog that combined and inherited the characteristics and physical attributes of the these three dogs.

The result was a new breed that the Wipfel's called the "Wolf-Chow"  (later renamed the Eurasier). The new type of dog retained the wolf-like appearance that was typical of the Spitz type of dog together with the distinctive pointed muzzle, pointed ears, thick coat and a high carried tail that curls up and over the back of the dog. The Eurasier also inherited the personality traits of their forebears. The Wipfel familiy achieved their objectives and the Eurasier was recognized by the German Kennel Club (VDH) and the FCI in 1973.

Eurasier Modern History: The modern history of the Eurasier moved on and the breed is now enjoyed as a favorite family pet and as a delightful companion.

Eurasier Height: The Eurasier breed is classified as a medium sized dog. The height to the shoulder of a male dog is 20-24 inches (52-60 cm). The height to the shoulder of a female dog is 19-22 inches (48-56 cm).

Eurasier Weight: The weight of the male in this medium sized dog is 51-71 lbs (23-32 kg). The weight of the smaller female dog is 40-57 lbs (18-26 kg).

Eurasier Coat Type: The coat type is described as thick double coat.

Eurasier Coat Colors: The colors of this dog breed consist of assorted colors consisting of Black, Red, Fawn, Black & Tan, Black & Silver and Wolf-Sable. The term 'Wolf-Sable' is used to describe a coat (often seen in Huskies and  Malamutes) that is light grey with silver or steel gray outer hairs (guard coat) that are tipped in black. N.B. Eurasier Grooming - MODERATE Grooming Needs: The grooming needs of the Eurasier are categorized as Moderate in order to maintain a healthy, tangle-free coat and reduce the risk of skin infections. The modest grooming needs of the Eurasier is considered to be mid-maintenance requiring weekly brushing and combing. Grooming Requirements should include bathing the dog on a monthly basis and making regular inspections of the nails, teeth, eyes and ears.
