Wealthy estate owner Sir Thomas Boughey of Aqualate Hall at Forton, Staffordshire, England began developing the breed in the early 1800's. One of the earliest descriptions of the English Springer Spaniel was in the book "House Dogs and Sporting Dogs", published in 1861 by the Englishman John Meyrick, who described the breed as "heavier, slower and more easily kept in range than the Cocker". Merrick also went on to state that "several distinct and valuable breeds are described under this head; namely the Clumber, Sussex and Norfolk spaniels". The English Springer Spaniel was exported to the United States as a Gun Dog (Bird Dog) and was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1910.
